This blog is supposed to be about all sorts of things but, shall we say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a minor interest of mine.

I'm fine with morally ambiguous characters, but Dollhouse hasn't made any of the characters particularly likeable. Nor has the moral ambiguity been that interesting rather than just gross. I would take disturbing at this point.

I felt the same way! This seemed like an episode that expected us to love it, but which failed to actually deliver much.

I think I'm far more accepting of the idea of a show with no morally acceptable characters. It doesn't prevent me from identifying with or rooting for the ones I like, even while recognizing the deeply troubling aspects of what they're doing.

In part that's because I secretly (or not so secretly) have some deep suspicions about the ethical justifications of pretty much any and all human enterprise. Not that I think there are no good people. But I do wonder about whether it's possible to build institutions that reflect what we value in ourselves rather than tearing all those things down. Shows which really delve into that kind of ethical miasma intrigue me.

I'm not saying Dollhouse is necessarily a successful example of that sort of show. But at least in theory I like the idea.

You didn't mention my favorite part of this episode: Topher is unconscious for half of it.
